‘Hands up to be a school governor’ is aimed at all sections of the community to raise interest in and awareness of the rewarding role of being a governor.
Schools are run by governing bodies working with the headteacher, staff, parents and the wider community to ensure that pupils achieve the best possible outcomes. Becoming a governor is a great way to contribute to a local school and to learn new skills.
All types of people over 18 years-of-age can become school governors. No special qualifications are required: enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education and broader outcomes are the most important qualities.
Governors do not need to have a child at a school. Many schools particularly welcome new governors who have transferable skills developed at work, or who have a particularly good understanding of the community served by the school.
Graham said “As a local school governor myself, I know how rewarding the role can be and how much of a difference governors can make in a school. The Council provides full training and support to governors and I would strongly encourage residents to consider getting involved and putting themselves forward to serve the local community in this way.”
